Sydney Gang Figure Fatally Shot in Vietnam Fuels Feud Fears

(MENAFN) Australian authorities moved to high alert Friday over the prospect of retaliatory attacks after a suspected Sydney underworld figure was executed in Vietnam, escalating a ferocious gang conflict driven by the city's drug trade, 9News reported Saturday.

Lorenzo Lemalu, 24 — identified by Australian media as a senior operative of the Coconut Cartel — was shot and killed outside a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City late Thursday.

Detectives are examining whether the slaying is connected to an entrenched criminal conflict in Sydney involving networks with ties to the Alameddine crime family. Authorities say Lemalu had ascended within the Coconut Cartel after breaking from a gang linked to the Alameddine network — a rupture police say has sparked a sustained surge of violence across Sydney in recent years.

Law enforcement in Australia are now on heightened alert for potential revenge attacks as investigators work in coordination with Vietnamese counterparts to establish the full circumstances of the killing.
